A tailor finishes the bespoke suit process

The Bespoke Tailoring Process

04/11/2025

If you’ve caught yourself admiring the fit and cut of a suit someone was wearing, it may well have been a bespoke suit. Perfect Tailor BKK creates these fine garments. We’ll share the steps to make one of our suits using the bespoke tailoring process. Consider having one made for you at our location in the MBK Center in Bangkok.

What is a Bespoke Suit?

A bespoke suit is a custom-tailored suit made especially for the owner. Many people are satisfied with off-the-rack suits. However, the differences become apparent once they can slip into a bespoke suit made to their measurements and tastes.

  • The bespoke suit is tailored to fit your body perfectly.
  • It’s also made with a higher quality of fabric and tailoring than off-the-rack suits.
  • The suits also have more durable stitching and finishing.

The Bespoke Tailoring Process

Making a bespoke suit starts with a consultation about your needs, lifestyle, and where and when you’ll likely wear the suit. You’ll be shown different styles that will include a choice of:

  • Cuffs or no cuffs,
  • Vented or non-vented
  • A range of lapels
  • Amount and style of front buttons
  • Additional inside pockets

You’ll be recommended a choice of fine fabrics based on lifestyle, climate, and other factors that may become relevant during your consultation.

Precise Measurements

The next step is to undergo a full-body measurement session. The session will include measurements, including your:

  • Neck
  • Shoulder width
  • Arm length and circumference
  • Chest
  • Waist
  • Inseam

The tailor will keep your measurements on file for making future suits.

Drafting a Pattern

The tailor will combine the measurements first onto a paper pattern, and then from the pattern onto the chosen cloth. The pattern will be saved along with the measurements.

First Fitting

The suit’s cloth pieces will be loosely basted together, and you’ll be asked to return for the first fitting. The tailor will make notes and add chalk marks to the cloth, directing them on changes and refinements to be made.

Once the fitting is finished, the garment will be disassembled, and the chalk marks and notes will tell the tailor how the garment will be re-cut and refined to be closer to the final suit. The garment will have padding and lapels added, and it will then be reassembled in what’s called the “pocket baste” stage.

Final Stage Before Fitting

The final stage is when the cloth covering the lapel padding is added, and the lining is basted into place. This will provide a better idea of how the suit will eventually fit and look. The trousers will also be finished at this stage of the process.

Second Fitting

In the second fitting, the tailor will focus on your comfort, posture, and ease of movement. They will also ensure the suit provides a clean silhouette. They can still make minor alterations if needed. Once you’re satisfied with the fit and quality, the suit will be steam pressed, packed into a suit bag, and be ready for pickup.

Worth the Investment

The bespoke suit process is much more involved than making a mass-produced suit, and may be slightly more expensive. However, where off-the-rack suits typically start to fray and fall apart after just a few years, a bespoke suit can last for decades and look as good as the day you bought it. Hand-tailored suits are investments that are well worth the money.
